    Configure Your HP Z640 Workstation

    Processor

    The Z640 supports two Intel Xeon E5-2600v3 and E5-2600v4 series processors. The Hyper-Threading support allows two threads to run simultaneously on each core -- Windows recognizes 44 total cores on this unit, 22 real and 44 virtual. It also supports "Turbo Boost" which automatically boosts the processor speed based on workload - so if an application is only using one of the 44 cores it will automatically increase the speed of the core in use and turn off the unused cores.

    The TDP wattage is the power supply consumption from each processor. Since the 'extreme' processors below are higher performance, they consume approximately 150w each. We recommend only one high performance processor in the Z640 considering the total power supply output. If you prefer to have two high performance 'extreme' processors, we recommend the HP Z840 since it comes with a higher wattage power supply and supplementary ventilation to support the heat.

    ZWorkstations installs only final release, legitimate, in production processors. We never use engineering sample (ES) processors.

    The Z640 supports booting off PCIe which provides tremendously faster options than the SATA3.We offer the latest HP Z Turbo Drives featuring the Samsung NVMe Flash Storage and Intel Enterprise Class SSD.

    By default, the operating system will be installed on this drive. Since these drives are super fast, you can edit from the primary drive as well. However, many pro users prefer to have separate drives for optimal performance:

    • The primary drive for the operating system, applications, and plug-ins
    • The secondary drive to edit from / as a scratch disk / data.

    HP Z Turbo Drive (NVMe Flash) more info

    The HP Z Turbo Drive is a PCIe 3.0 mount that carries a Samsung NVMe flash storage drive.

    • HP typyically uses the 2015/2016 model SM951 which performs at about 1200MB/s Write and 1800MB/s Read.
    • We typically use the current 2016/2017 model SM961 which performs at about 1750MB/s Write and 2500MB/s Read.

    Upon request, we can divide one drive into two partitions if you would like to have two operating systems for different purposes.

    HP Z Turbo Drive Quad Pro (NVMe Flash RAID) more info

    The HP Z Turbo Drive Quad Pro Card integrates up to four Samsung SM951/SM961 NVMe SSD modules into one PCIe x16 card. This card is configured with two, three or four 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB modules providing a max capacity of 4TB.

    Windows 10 cannot be installed on a PCIe RAID partition. If you select the HP Quad Pro, the first drive will be a separate single partition. If you want all four drives to be part of a RAID, see 'Notes' section below.

    Two drives:

    • First drive for the operating system
    • Second drive for editing / data
    • Each drive to perform at 1,200MB/s Write | 1,800MB/s Read

    Three drives:

    • First drive for the operating system (1200MB/s Write | 1800MB/s Read)
    • Second and third drive in RAID 0 stripe configuration for high speed editing / data (2,500MB/s Write | 3,500MB/s Read)
    • We can install a combination of drives. For example, one 256GB for the operating system and two 1TB drives for the editing RAID.

    Since hard drives are 3.5" and solid-state drives are 2.5", the drive adapters are included in the listed price.

    Choose an optional second graphics card. Note that graphics cards work independently of each other. The benefit if a second graphics card is to support more displays or if you plan to perform multiple rendering or performance tasks at the same time. If you wish to have two cards working together to increase performance, choose a NVIDIA Quadro graphics card plus a NVIDIA Tesla graphics accelerator. The NVIDIA Tesla cards work in conjunction of the Quadro as computing processors.
