    Processor

    The HP Z840 supports dual Intel Xeon E5-2600v3 and E5-2600v4 series processors for the ultimate performance. The Hyper-Threading support allows two threads to run simultaneously on each core -- Windows recognizes 88 total cores on the Z840, 44 real and 44 virtual. It also supports "Turbo Boost" which automatically boosts the processor speed based on workload - so if an application is only using one of the 88 cores it will automatically increase the speed of the core in use and turn off the unused cores.

    If you are not sure your whether projects will take advantage of an extra processor (or the additional cores), the HP Z840 optional second processor addition allows you to purchase the workstation with one processor and add a second processor later if you realize it will improve your workflow. Similarly, if you are on a budget, the HP Z840 offers the benefit of purchasing with a single processor at a lower price; then, adding a second matching processor at a later day.

    Choose the single processor Z840 for the following reasons:

    • if you intend to later add an identical processor to improve performance.
    • If you intend to add two high performance graphics cards.

    If you plan on sticking with one processor and one graphics card, the Z640 is a better choice since you will get the same configuration at a lower price. (The Z640 chassis costs less than the Z840 chassis by roughly ~$750).

    The Z840 supports booting off PCIe which is four times faster than a SATA3 SSD. We offer the latest HP Z Turbo Drives featuring the Samsung NVMe Flash Storage.

    If 'none' is selected for this section, we will install the operating system on the drive selected in 'Drive Bay 1'. If a drive is selected in this section, the operating system will be installed on it. Since these drives are super fast, you can edit from the primary drive as well. However, many pro users prefer to have separate drives for optimal performance:

    • The primary drive for the operating system, applications, and plug-ins
    • The secondary drive for your project files to edit from / as a scratch disk / cache.

    The HP Z Turbo Drive is a PCIe 3.0 mount that carries a Samsung NVMe flash storage drive.

    • HP typyically uses the 2015/2016 model SM951 which performs at about 1200MB/s Write and 1800MB/s Read.
    • We typically use the current 2016/2017 model SM961 which performs at about 1750MB/s Write and 2500MB/s Read.

    Upon request, we can divide one drive into two partitions if you would like to have two operating systems for different purposes.

    Flash NVMe Storage (Secondary)

    We will install the operating system in the drive selected in the Flash NVMe Primary or Hard Drive/ SSD Bay 1 section. The secondary NVMe drive can be used for a second operating system if you plan to have dual boot options or virtual machines. For editing, it can be utilized for footage / project files as a scratch disk. Choose the NVMe RAID if you plan to run extreme computations, or edit 6K or 8K footage.

    The HP Z Turbo Drive Quad Pro Card integrates up to four Samsung SM951/SM961 NVMe SSD modules into one PCIe x16 card. This card is configured with two or four 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB modules providing a max capacity of 4TB. If you are seeking maximal performance for editing, this is the best route. You can get up to 4TB performing at 6,000-7,000MB/s. Since this is a secondary section, this super fast partition is best utilized to edit from / as a scratch disk.

    The purpose of RAID 0 (stripe RAID) is performance. Two or four drives are partitioned together to achieve maximal read and write speeds which is excellent for editing. However, since the data is split across all the drives, RAID 0 offers no fault tolerance - if any of the constituent drives fails, the RAID unit fails. Thus, it is vital to back up all data when using a stripe RAID 0 array.

    Upon request, we can arrange drives in RAID 1 mirror configuration for redundancy / back up. For example, if you select two 1TB drives, the total capacity will be 1TB because the second 1TB will serve as a mirror.

    Since these drives offer optimal performance at a higher cost, we recommend using it to edit from. In addition, have high capacity standard hard drives as a backup / data storage.

The benefit if a second graphics card is to support more displays or if you plan to perform multiple rendering or performance tasks at the same time. If you wish to have two cards working together to increase performance, choose a NVIDIA Quadro graphics card plus a NVIDIA Tesla graphics accelerator. The NVIDIA Tesla cards work in conjunction of the Quadro as computing processors.
